About Judge Gormley

A Letter from Judge Gormley

Welcome to my campaign website!  I would be honored to have your support in my race for a seat on Ohio’s Fifth District Court of Appeals.  The primary election will be on March 19, 2024, and both early and absentee voting start on February 21, 2024.

I bring to the race a well-balanced range and depth of experience – including significant appellate-court experience – in both civil and criminal cases.  In the years since I graduated from Harvard Law School in 1990, I have worked at a law firm, as an assistant prosecutor, as an assistant attorney general, as state solicitor, as the lawyer for the Supreme Court of Ohio, as a municipal-court judge, and as a common-pleas-court judge.

During my years as a lawyer before I became a judge, I served as the lead trial prosecutor in a death-penalty murder trial, and I successfully defended Ohio’s state motto “With God All Things Are Possible” when the ACLU sued in federal court to prevent the display of that motto outside the Ohio Statehouse.  I also argued before the U.S. Supreme Court, the Ohio Supreme Court, and the federal court of appeals in Cincinnati.

And during my 16+ years as a trial judge in Delaware County, I have handled thousands of civil, criminal, and traffic cases.  I served for seven years on the Delaware Municipal Court, and now I’m in my second six-year term on the Court of Common Pleas of Delaware County.  I have presided at more than 160 jury trials, I oversee a mental-health docket, and I bring years of experience doing the day-in and day-out work of ruling on motions, imposing sentences, and keeping the wheels of justice moving as they should.

A judge must be patient and even-tempered so that all parties and their lawyers understand that they are welcome in the courtroom and will receive a fair and impartial hearing from the judge.  I have demonstrated in my work as a lawyer and as a judge an ability and desire to treat others with respect, and I believe that my years of experience in the courtroom give me the wisdom and humility that we all want to see on a court of appeals.

I thank you for your support.  I look forward to meeting persons who reside in every corner of the 15-county Fifth District in which I’m running.  Please take the opportunity to learn more about my background by exploring the pages of this website, and please let me know if you would like to volunteer to help with the campaign.

Sincerely yours,

David Gormley
